The second entry to the Mononoke film trilogy is set to release on 14 March.

The Mononoke film project has revealed additional cast members, a main visual, and a main trailer for the upcoming entry to the trilogy, titled ‘Mononoke the Movie Trilogy: Chapter 2: The Ashes of Rage’. The movie is set to premiere in theatres across Japan on 14 March.

On a post to the film trilogy’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, the movie was teased with the main visual, which features the Medicine Seller surrounded by colourful fire.

The main trailer features snippets of the movie, which seems to center around the threat of Fire Rats. The Medicine Seller is thrust into a series of incidents stemming from a mysterious case of a baby suffering from spontaneous combustion.

The additional cast featured in the trailer are as follows:

  • Fujimaki - Ryo Horikawa
  • Katsunuma - Naomi Kusumi
  • Suikoin - Yoshiko Sakakibara
  • Sayo - Yukana
  • Sachiko - Atsumi Tanezaki

The previously announced new cast members are:

  • Yomichi Tokita - Cho
  • Roju Otomo - Kenyuu Horiuchi

Hiroshi Kamiya reprises his role as the Medicine Seller, while the rest of the returning cast members care:

  • Botan Otomo - Haruka Tomatsu
  • Fuki Tokita - Yoko Hikasa
  • Saburomaru Tokita - Yuki Kaji

The second film’s theme song, titled ‘Hana Muso’, is performed by the singer Aina The End.

The first film of the trilogy, titled ‘Mononoke The Movie: Phantom in the Rain’, premiered in Japan in July 2024, and is currently available for streaming on Netflix. Phantom in the Rain won the Azis: Satoshi Kon Award for Excellence in Animation, bagging best animated feature film during the 2024 Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal. The movie trilogy is based on the 2007 Mononoke anime, which itself was a spinoff to the popular 2006 ‘Ayakashi - Samurai Horror Tales’ anime.
