Viz brings back BLACK TORCH with a surprising anime adaptation

The manga got cancelled after only five volumes.

Viz Media revealed during the Emerald City Comic Con, that BLACK TORCH will be getting an anime. This is shocking news for the manga readers as the series was cancelled after only five volumes. An X account was also created for the upcoming series, which fans are excited about. A new key visual and short trailer comprising some iconic manga panels was released.

BLACK TORCH anime production and staff details

During the Emerald City Comic Con, it was revealed that Tsuyoshi Takaki’s manga BLACK TORCH is getting an anime adaptation. 100Studio Production is producing the series with Kei Umabiki as director. Gigaemon Ichikawa is writing the scripts for the anime while Gō Suzuki is in charge of character design. Yutaka Yamada is composing the music. The series has been licensed by Viz Media.

The short trailer of the anime features many characters who will appear in the series. The new teaser visual highlights the protagonist Jiro Azuma. The mangaka Tsuyoshi Takaki has said that he’s also surprised and excited about the project and thanked all his fans in both Japan and other countries. He’s helping storyboard the anime, and feels that his work is being made into something better.

The story of BLACK TORCH revolves around Jiro Azuma, a trained Ninja and a teenage punk. He was bullied all his life for talking to animals, but his special ability grants him the power to understand them. One day, some birds lead Jiro into the jungle to save an injured cat. But the cat turns out to be a powerful Mononoke named Rago, who fuses with Jiro when the boy is fatally wounded by another monster. The manga first began serialising in December 2016 and ran till March 2018.
