The latest chapter of Tatsuya Endo’s manga was only five pages long, making fans think that it’s filler content. However, this short update revealed something massive which the readers were not ready for. The chapter opens with a sequence where a younger Anya is seen walking with a lady. It was then revealed that this woman was likely Anya’s biological mother.

As previously mentioned, the chapter opens with a scene where a lady and a child are seen walking together. Both of their clothes resemble hospital gowns and both of them also sport double space buns that we have seen Anya wearing constantly. When we see the little girl’s face, we realize it’s a younger Anya. When the child sees a butterfly, she tries to say its name and excitedly shows it to the older woman. The lady smiles and asks wouldn’t it be nice if they could also soar through the night like the butterfly. Hearing this, Anya hugs the woman and calls her ‘Mama’.
The scene moves to reality, revealing that it was Anya’s dream we were seeing till now. Anya almost strangles Bond in her sleep, but he is rescued by Yor. Loid tells Anya to not sleep at odd times as it can mess with her sleep schedule. Yor asks her what she wants to eat and Anya can’t remember the name of the dish. Yor helpfully says Potato Gratin as the one she wants to eat. She asks if Yor can read her mind, which piques Loid’s interest. She tells him that Anya saw a potato gratin on TV before she fell asleep and said that she wanted that. Loid smiles and leaves to go to the market.

If it weren’t for the first part, then the latest issue could be dismissed as a filler chapter. However, the beginning was extremely meaningful to the story for several reasons. This is the first time Anya’s mother is mentioned. Both Loid and the readers know that Anya was in and out of the orphanage because nobody who adopted her wanted to keep her for too long. Everyone assumed that her parents had both passed away.
However, this new chapter suggests that Anya’s mother was also in the same place as her and might have even had the same powers. The way her topic was only brought up now after Melinda told Loid about her suspicions about Donovan being a mind-reader seems to be a foreshadowing of some sort. Fans are eager to see what more is revealed about the mysterious lady and her powers.
