8. Dorohedoro

Taking a sharp turn away from the wholesome and romantic, Dorohedoro is jam-packed with gory action. This Netflix exclusive, adapted from Q Hayashida’s manga, is set in a post-apocalyptic earth divided into three parts. Sorcerers from the other plane often come to the Hole and experiment on humans, leaving behind magic waste. Caiman, a man who has a lizard head, is looking for the sorcerer who experimented on him as he doesn’t remember what happened to him. Helping him is a restaurant owner named Nikaido, a sorcerer who refuses to use magic. The two end up in deep trouble when a powerful magician named En sends two mercenaries to kill Caiman. The series is exciting and entertaining, with a second season on the way!

7. Isekai Ojisan

Also known as Uncle from Another World, this anime is adapted from Hotondoshindeiru’s fantasy comedy manga of the same name. It revolves around a 34-year-old man named Yōsuke Shibazaki, who wakes up from a 17-year coma in modern-day Japan. He reveals to his nephew Takafumi that he was in a different fantasy world all this time, and went through some horrific things there. As Takafumi and his childhood friend Sumika help his uncle adjust to the modern world, he shows them his memories. The surprisingly sweet and wholesome anime puts a twist on the Isekai genre that will keep you glued to your seat.

6. Cyberpunk Edgerunners

Set in the same world as the Cyberpunk 2077 video game, this Netflix Original miniseries received a ton of positive feedback when it came out in 2022. The story is set in a dystopian world where corruption runs rampant, and people are addicted to cybernetics implants. One poor kid named David from the Night City loses his mother during a shooting and decides to quit his school. He meets with a group of black-market mercenaries and joins them to become an edgerunner. Adapted from Wataru Momose’s manga of the same name, Romantic Killer puts a slight twist on your run-of-the-mill romance story. An Otome game addict Anzu Hoshino is one day visited by a tiny monster wizard who claims to be the Love Cupid named Riri. The wizard tells her that due to men's and women’s deceased romantic interest, there has been a decline in the birthrate. This is why Riri has arranged some dates for Anzu with handsome guys that she can fall in love with. He holds Anzu’s snacks, games, and cat hostage when she refuses. The protagonist then meets with several guys with unique personalities, expanding her romantic experience. The series is hilarious, witty, and sweet. A perfect short watch for those who love romance with a twist.

4. Delicious in Dungeon

If you are new to anime and want a wholesome yet exciting introduction to the fantasy genre, then this adaptation of Ryoko Kui’s manga is a great title for you. The story focuses on a human named Laios, who enters a dangerous dungeon after losing his sister Falin to a monster there. His other teammates are a halfling called Chilchuk and an elf called Marcille. On their journey, they are joined by a dwarf named Senshi, who helps Laios and the others kill the monsters inside the dungeon and make them into delicious dishes. The series features everything from familial bonds to tasty food to amazing action in a massively entertaining package. A second season has also been announced.

3. Pluto

With only eight episodes, Pluto was able to cause a storm in the world of anime in 2023. Set in a world where robots and humans coexist, everyone is shaken up by a string of grizzly murders of both humans and robots. The robots they’re killing can be used as weapons of mass destruction, while the humans are connected to International Robot Laws. A robot named Gesicht and several other robots that are trying to solve the case that can destroy the earth. 2. Dandadan

Despite being the most recent title on the list, Dandadan was one of the most popular shonen shows of Fall 2024. Adapted from Yukinobu Tatsu’s manga, the anime features two teenagers, Ken Takakura - who believes in and loves aliens, and Momo Ayase - who believes in ghosts as her grandmother is a spirit medium. Things go haywire when they try to settle things with a bet. An evil Yokai spirit possesses Takakura aka Okarun while Momo awakens her psychic powers after being attacked by aliens. The two of them juggle supernatural attacks, studies, and an awkward love with the help of Momo’s grandma. The bizarre and action-packed show is as exciting as it’s hilarious. The show was so popular that the second season is scheduled to come out in July 2025.

1. Violet Evergarden

Ranked as one of the most heartbreaking anime series of recent years, Violet Evergarden follows the story of the titular protagonist. After the war, Violet, who was raised to be a killing machine, wakes up alone in a hospital. She only remembers her beloved commander saying ‘I love you’, but she has no understanding of it. To realize what those words mean, Violet starts working as an Auto Memory Doll who is tasked with transcribing people’s thoughts onto paper. She goes through an emotional and fulfilling journey to change the lives of her clients and find meaning within hers. Based on Kana Akatsuki’s novel series, this show has 13 episodes, an OVA, and three movies, all available to watch on Netflix.
