After hearing that Asa likes him, Denji starts to cry.
The latest chapter of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga once again brought the protagonist’s lethal weakness to the forefront. Although Yoru calls him pathetic and pitiful, Denji still lets her control him because she is the only person who’s nice to him. She also realises that she can control Denji with sexual promises and that’s exactly what she does. Much like Makima and some other women in Denji’s life, Yoru also promises physical intimacy to him in exchange for his power.

Yoru, who is sitting on Denji’s lap, talks about what a mess his life has been. She points out that even though he knows she will turn him into a weapon, he’s willingly letting her do what she wants because Yoru is the only one who’s nice to him. She suddenly kisses Denji’s cheek and says that she likes the pitiful look on his face and it makes her want to cheer him up. Denji asks if she could move some more while sitting on his lap and she refuses. When he asks why, she answers it’s because he becomes more pitiful when she says no. Denji then asks if she hates him.
After thinking for a bit, Yoru says that Asa likes Denji, and since they share a brain, she likes him too. Hearing this, Denji starts crying as he never thought someone would still like him. Asa feels immense pity for him and starts to kiss him. After a while, she asks whether Denji really wants to be physically intimate with her, to which he says yes. She promises that if Denji successfully defeats the Death Devil when she ascends, she will make love to him. However, if he fails, she will turn him into a weapon and kill the devil herself.

Previously in the manga, we saw that Denji was controlled and manipulated by people like Makima, Reze, and even Power. All of them exploited Denji’s weakness, which is his desire for sexual relations with women. After losing so many people in his life, during the Aging Devil arc, people thought he had finally matured a bit. However, it seems that the same tactics that Makima used when she wanted him to kill the Gun Devil still work on the protagonist. Despite knowing that he’s being controlled by Yoru, Denji doesn’t seem to care as long as he receives the attention he so desperately craves. Although it shows us how devastating his life has been, it’s pretty disappointing to see his character progression being broken down again and again.
