Devil May Cry animated series confirmed for a Season 2

The announcement came only a week after the debut of the series.

Dante isn’t done swinging his sword just yet. Less than a week after the debut of the anime adaptation of Devil May Cry, Netflix has announced that the series will return for a second season. The news came swiftly after the animated show, developed by Adi Shankar (Castlevania) and Studio Mir, made a significant splash. This was announced on the Devil May Cry franchise's official X (formerly Twitter) account:

While specific details about Season 2 remain under wraps, Netflix has confirmed that the next chapter of the demon hunter’s saga is officially in the works. For now, the announcement art simply promises the next season will be “coming soon.”

In season 1, dark forces are at work, attempting to open a portal between the human and demon realms. At the centre of it all is Dante, an orphaned demon hunter for hire, oblivious to the fact that the fate of both worlds rests on his shoulders.

Devil May Cry animated series tops the charts in the first week

The Devil May Cry anime adaptation was created by Adi Shankar and produced by South Korean Studio Mir. The first season of Devil May Cry garnered impressive numbers, amassing 5.3 million views within its first four days of release. This milestone was achieved thanks to a massive 21 million hours watched, which was calculated from the series’ 3-hour, 56-minute runtime. That performance helped the show secure a spot in the top rankings for the week of 31 March.

In fact, Devil May Cry soared to the fourth spot globally, only trailing Adolescence (17.8 million views), Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer (13 million views), and Pulse (6.5 million views). The series also achieved a 95% critics’ approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Devil May Cry is adapted from the acclaimed action-adventure game of the same name, developed by Capcom and created by Hideki Kamiya. The story centres on Dante, a demon hunter driven by a personal mission to avenge his mother’s death by slaying every demon in his path.

The video game series originally launched on PlayStation 2 in 2001, crafted by Hideki Kamiya, renowned for his work on games like Bayonetta and Okami. It’s not the first time the franchise has been adapted into anime, with Madhouse previously handling an adaptation in 2007.

The latest game in the series, Devil May Cry 5, debuted on 8 March 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The Special Edition, released in November 2020, brought next-gen upgrades, including playable Vergil. Since then, fans have been waiting for the next mainline entry, though no new game has been announced as of yet. However, now with a second season of the anime confirmed, it looks like the demon-hunting action will continue to thrill fans for some time.
