Kaiju No. 8 Chapter 123: The final monster changes tactics as a character steps up to save the day

The Meireki-era Daikaiju’s final form threatens the whole country.

The stakes are higher than they’ve ever been in Naoya Matsumoto’s monster manga. In the latest chapter, Kafka realised that the mega-monster has released its final form that was hidden under the ground for 400 years. As the defeated monsters start awakening and threatening the country, Captain Gen Narumi hands his most trusted weapon to his protégé.

Kaiju No. 8 Chapter 123 recap

As the monstrous Kaiju starts to change again, Kafka announces that the true form of the Meireki-era Daikaiju is here. It first appeared 400 years ago, and turned the city of Tokyo to ash and caused the vast network of monsters that thrive underground. The incredibly massive form of the monster finally awakens, and everyone feels the shift in energy. Its mighty scream blows away soldiers and buildings. Kafka tries to attack, but its multiple and ever-changing heads unleash a slash that injures him. The monster, which is stronger now, sends out a terrible scream next, which causes numerous new monster signals to activate.

The rest of the soldiers are terrified to realise that the monsters that they painstakingly defeated have started to wake up again. With No. 9’s power, the Meireki-era Daikaiju can even control the Kaiju corpses. The scope of this monster attack will not just be Tokyo, but the whole country of Japan. Watching the chaos unfold, Kafka decides to hurry up and attack again, but the Daikaiju slashes through him. Hoshina and Narumi both realize that the only way to find a path through the Daikaiju’s defenses is Numbers Weapon 1. Hoshina asks whether Narumi is still in the condition to use it, and the Captain says that it’s not him who will be using it. We then see Kikoru Shinomiya, Narumi’s protégé, standing on top of a building, with No. 1’s vision shining on top of her eyes.

Kaiju No. 8 Chapter 123 review

It’s been a long time since I’ve gotten so fired-up about a Kaiju No. 8 chapter. Being one of my favourite characters, Kikoru Shinomiya is an absolute prodigy and I can’t think of a better person to inherit Gen Narumi’s weapon. Despite being so young, Kikoru is someone whom Narumi has trained with utmost care and respect. After the death of her father, Shinomiya became an even more determined soldier, and the only one in the Kaiju Defense Force to use two number weapons. I’m really excited to see Kafka and Kikoru team up to take down the Daikaiju. Although I’ll be a bit disheartened if Mina doesn’t join the battle at some point. Overall, Maatsumoto gave a perfect start to the final battle of the series with this chapter.
