Aira and Rin face off against basketball-playing headless yokai.
The previous chapter of Yukinobu Tatsu’s manga introduced the headless Nukekubi basketball players. It was revealed in the latest chapter that they dunked Rin through one of the hoops, causing her to lose her body and become a talking head. Thankfully, Aira was able to save her before she lost all her life force.

Dandadan Chapter 184 recap

Aira saves class rep Rin Sawaki’s floating head. She asks Mai Kawabanga, the Yokai spirit of Rin’s childhood friend, about what happened. We learned that the headless Nukekubi yokai had suddenly grabbed Rin when she was spying on them. They then slam-dunked her head into the basketball hoop, causing it to pop off the body. As Aira dodges some more attacks from the athletic monsters, she notices something coming out of Rin’s severed neck. She asks Mai what these yokai really are. It turns out that they’re known as ‘Severed head dribblers’. If someone sneaks into the gym at night, they’ll fight these vengeful players who like dribbling with their heads.
Suddenly, Rin’s severed head starts talking and says it’s great that Aira came as Kouki Yukishiro is in a lot of trouble. Aira freaks out, and even Rin is shocked to see that she has no body. Mai says that Rin’s body is in the afterlife while her head and consciousness are still intact. But if her life force, which Aira noticed, keeps seeping out of her, she’ll be forced to drift in the gym for eternity. Suddenly, more headless yokai attack them, and Mai uses her body to shield Aira. Another attack scrapes through Aira’s back, leaving her bleeding. Rin says that she can’t sing without her body, which means she can’t save Aira.

A yokai picks up Aira and starts dribbling with her injured body. He tries to dunk her head. But Aira remembers an instance from her childhood when she thought her doll lost its body because she couldn’t see it under the water. With an idea forming, she uses her long hair and yokai powers to put Rin’s head through the opposite end of the loop and upward, causing the class rep to get her body back. Before they both can be dunked again, Rin starts singing, changing into her ‘idol’ outfit. Aira questions her on it, and Rin feels embarrassed. But Mai says that it’s the perfect outfit since Rin is an idol and her singing can control gravity. Her song causes the floating heads to fall to the ground. But Aira refuses to hide behind her and prepares to fight the enemies.
Dandadan Chapter 184 review
Image: Shueisha/ Yukinobu Tatsu
Every time I start despising Aira’s character a little bit because of her obsession with Okarun, she proves to me how freaking cool she actually is. I’m still not over the trauma Dandadan anime episode 7 gave me, and I’m glad she’s still using her powers so well. This chapter also proved that she’s incredibly smart, with how she figured out the trick of Rin’s floating head. On the other hand, it’s good to see Rin back. Despite the frankly questionable outfit, I can’t help but feel proud of the kids that have come so far after suffering from so much trauma. I can’t wait for the two girls to absolutely destroy the headless enemies. Although I’m pretty worried about Kouki after Rin’s ominous statement, I’m sure they can save her in the nick of time.
