Edomae no Shun mangaka Tsukumo Mori passes away

The author gave permission to his family to continue the manga after his passing.

Legendary manga author Tsukumo Mori, known for his long-running manga series Edomae no Shun sadly passed away on 17 February, 2025. Oricon News announced that the Manga Goraku editorial department of Nihon Bungeisha first made the news public on 19 February. His most popular series, a manga about a sushi chef called Edomae no Shun, first began serialising in 1999 with artist Satou Terushi illustrating it.

The manga is massively popular in Japan, comprising 126 volumes and several side stories including Sushi Tamashii, Kita no Sushihime, Edomae no Shun Shun to Daigo, Niji no Hitosara, and Uobaka!! The last of the work Tsukumo Mori had created in collaboration with Terushi will be published in the magazine on March 14. It will be the 1,292nd chapter of the series. As per the announcement, Edomae no Shun will continue publication beyond this, as the author gave his consent before he passed. With his family’s blessing, the magazine will continue the gourmet manga legacy Tsukumo Mori has left behind.

The magazine’s staff have expressed their grief and despair over the author’s passing. The Edomae no Shun manga tells the story of Shun Yanahiga, the third-generation owner of Yanagi Sushi. As the youngest of the family, Shun has to learn the ins and outs of sushi making from his father. The heartfelt slice-of-life series about a sushi chef was also adapted into a live-action drama series in 2018. With Tsukumo Mori’s passing, the manga world has lost one of its gems.
