Shogakukan has announced the winners for the 70th Shogakukan Manga Award
Publishing company Shogakukan held its final judgements for the 70th Shogakukan Manga Award on Friday, 17 January, and revealed its winners in an official announcement.
The Shogakukan Manga Award is one of Japan’s major manga awards, and is also one of the oldest having been established in 1955.
Until 2022, the Award was categorised into four: Kodomo (kids), Shounen (boys), Shoujo (girls), and General. Shogakukan would remove the categories in the 69th iteration of the Award.
For the 70th iteration, all nominees were selected from works published in magazines, books, and online media after January 21, 2024. While recommendations from judges, manga artists, critics, magazine and newspaper editors, related cultural organisations, bookstore personnel, and general readers are compiled for consideration in a joint review and discussion to select the candidates.
The winners for the 70th Shogakukan Manga Award are as follows:
- Burning Kabaddi by Musashino Hajime; serialised on Shogakukan’s Ura Sunday website and MangaONE app from July 2015 to July 2024.
- Kore Kaite Shine by Minoru Toyoda; serialised in Shogakukan’s Monthly Shonen Sunday magazine since November 2021.

Each winning work will receive a bronze statuette called a “Minori,” designed by Shigeru Nakano; a certificate, and a prize of 1 million yen (roughly $6,415).
The 2023 winners for the 69th Shogakukan Manga Award were Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, The Elusive Samurai, Suji de Asobo, and Trillion Game.
