Hase and the alien start fighting amongst themselves.
Yukinobu Tatsu once again proved his talent for including comedy in high-octane action sequences in the latest chapter of his manga. There was a glimpse of the sad backstory of the alien, but the plot didn’t delve too much into it. Instead, it focused on Okarun and Kinta—two individuals without supernatural powers—using nanoskin to fight against the enemies. On the other hand, Hase and the alien got into a fight as both of them want to fight Okarun and nobody wants to give up.

Dandadan Chapter 189 recap

The issue begins with the alien attacking Okarun as she remembers her past, and how her lover was taken from her during the Kur invasion. Okarun fights back, but he accidentally touches the protective suit Kinta had made out of him from nanoskin. His touch causes the material to change shape and become useless. He is then kicked away by the alien and most of the suit breaks apart, causing him some minor injury. However, the alien is suddenly attacked by Hase—who uses his Yokai power to kick her down. He is angry with her for interrupting the fight he wants to have with Takakura (Okarun).
While the enemies are fighting, Kinta curses Okarun for touching the nanoskin and proposes a bizarre idea. He suggests that the two of them should merge using the nanoskin they have left. Kinta creates a massive robotic structure with Okarun as the legs and himself as the head. Okarun asks if this is just a ploy to get him to carry Kinta. He answers that he can handle the top part of the robot better, but since Okarun has a lot more experience in hand-to-hand combat, they need his reflexes to win the fight. Hase finally beats the alien and approaches the Kinta-Okarun robot.

Thanks to Okarun’s training and Kinta’s control over nanoskin, they handle the robot pretty well and are able to stay away from Hase’s direct attacks. However, their evasion tactics annoy Hase—who asks Okarun to use his Yokai powers and fight him face-to-face. This proves that other than his friends, nobody knows about Okarun losing his powers yet. His attacks cause the robotic structure to fly back. Okarun says that merging has made the robot heavier and it has already taken quite a bit of damage. Kinta is shocked when his friend points out that merging has actually made them weaker than they were individually.
Dandadan Chapter 189 review

Unlike the previous few chapters, nothing particularly dramatic happened in this one. Many fans were hoping to see a backstory of the alien girl, but unfortunately—we only got a glimpse. However, the action in the chapter was pretty great, especially the fight between Hase and the alien. I also particularly enjoyed the bickering friendship between Okarun and Kinta as we haven’t seen their dynamic a lot before. The comedy wasn’t overdone and made the chapter more fun to read. I’m excited to see what Kinta makes out of the nanoskin next—espcially if it’s some kind of weapon instead of protective gear. It would also be great if Okarun could take down Hase without his supernatural powers (albeit I do miss Turbo Granny a lot).
