Hyakuemu from Orb creator gets anime movie, releases in September 2025

The sports manga is releasing its anime film adaptation in Japan this coming September.

First announced by the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in May 2024, the anime film adaptation for Uoto’s sports manga, 100M (Hyakuemu) finally has a release date for Japan: 19 September, 2025!

The news was revealed through the movie’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, alongside a trailer and main cast announcement.

Tori Matsuzaka is taking on the role of the gifted runner Togashi. The X account for Hyakuemu released a statement from Matsuzaka. Through a machine-translation, the statement reads:

“When I read the original work, I felt the characters breathing, the sound of cutting through the wind, the sound of their feet running on the ground, their sweat, and their body temperature. It was my first experience. Above all, I was moved by the conflicts and delicate emotions of each player, and I couldn’t stop turning the pages. I felt honored to be able to participate in the Hyakuemu animated film, but at the same time, I felt a tremendous amount of pressure. It’s been 14 years since I last worked with Someya-kun (referring to Shota Sometani), and I was very happy. The Komiya that Someya-kun played was just like Komiya. I hope that the sound, sweat, and body temperature that I felt from the original work will be conveyed in this work. Please look forward to it.

Meanwhile, Shota Sometani is playing as Komiya, who obsesses over the 100-meter dash after he meets Togashi. Similar to Matsuzaka, a statement was also released:

“When I read Uoto-sensei’s original work, I was struck by the sound of the 100M sprint that should not be heard. I could almost hear it, and felt a sense of dynamism, like I was cutting through the wind. I was drawn to the idea that if I could turn that into animation, it would definitely be an interesting piece. Komiya has a human side to him, as if he gets carried away and loses tracks of his limits, which resonates with me as well. I took great care in my performance so that the audience would be able to take a breather without even realising it.”

The movie is directed by Kenji Iwaizawa, with a screenplay by Yasuyuki Muto. Keisuke Kojima is the character designer and chief animation director, while Hiroaki Tsutsumi is composing the music. Rock ‘n’ Roll Mountain is animating the film, while Pony Canyon, TBS TV and ASMIK Ace handle production, with Yusuke Terada, Yuki Katayama, and Akane Taketsugu as producers.

Hyakuemu plot and other details

Hyakuemu is a Japanese sports manga written and illustrated by Uoto, the artist behind Orb: On The Movements of the Earth. It was serialised online through Kodansha’s Pocket Magazine website and app from November 2018 to August 2019, with a total of five tankobon volumes.

The official website for Hyakuemu describes the story as:

Togashi is a naturally fast runner who has found both friends and a place to belong, while Komiya is a transfer student who simply runs as hard as he can to forget his harsh reality. Togashi teaches Komiya how to run faster, and the two practice together after school. Having found something to devote himself to, Komiya becomes greedy and pursues records. Gradually, the two develop a relationship that can be described as both rivals and best friends through the 100m sprint.

A few years later, Togashi has become known as a genius runner, but is terrified by the fear of having to keep winning, when Komiya, who has become one of the top runners, appears before him.
