Upcoming girls love anime There’s No Freaking Way I’ll Be Your Lover! Unless… or more colloquially known as Watanare (Watashi ga Koibito ni Nareru Wake Naijan, Muri…) has revealed an official teaser promotional video, new character visuals, and additional cast members for the show. According to the official Watanare website and the series’ official X (formerly Twitter) account, the anime is scheduled for July 2025, although no official date has been set as of yet.
Watanare cast and staff
The additional cast for Watanare has been revealed to be Kana Ichinose, who is taking on the role of Koto Satsuki. While Takako Tanaka is voicing Kaho Koyanagi. The previously announced cast are as follows:
- Ajisai Sena: Yukari Anzai
- Mai Ouzuka: Saori Oonishi
- Renako Amaori: Kanna Nakamura
Studio MOTHER is animating the series, with Natsumi Uchinuma as director. Naruhisa Arakawa is writing the script and handling series composition, while Takayuki Yamaguchi is the sound director alongside Yoshiaki Fujisawa, who is in charge of music.
Watanare plot and other details
The Watanare anime adapts the original light novel series written by Teren Mikami and illustrated by Eku Takeshima. The light novels have been published by Shueisha since 2020, and currently has seven volumes to date. A manga adaptation with art by Musshu was launched through Shueisha’s Niconico Seiga website in 2020, and both the light novels and manga have been licensed in English by Seven Seas Entertainment.
The plot of the story according to Seven Seas Entertainment is as follows:
Awkward, introverted Amaori Renako is leaving her lonely middle school life behind, determined to become an outgoing and popular high schooler. Glamorous, confident Oduka Mai is Renako’s total opposite: wealthy, carefree, and a literal fashion model. Against the odds, the two girls form an immediate connection. Renako thinks she may have found the best friend of her dreams…until Mai’s love confession sends her feelings into a tailspin. Renako wants to prove to Mai that being BFFs is better than being girlfriends, but Mai is dead set on convincing Renako that they’re destined to be lovers!
