MF Ghost reveals an upcoming third season for the anime as manga concludes.

The popular racing drama anime MF Ghost, based on the manga by Initial D creator Shuichi Shigeno, has confirmed a Season 3 for 2026, right after the manga released its final chapter. The announcement, which was revealed on MF Ghost’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, included a short video commemorating the completion of the manga serialisation.

MF Ghost completes its serialisation today on 17 February 2025, after 8-and-a-half years. The manga published its first chapter in Kodansha’s Weekly Young Magazine in September 2017, and is the first automobile-themed manga by Shigeno after Initial D’s conclusion in 2013. MF Ghost was adapted into an anime television series by Felix Film in January 2022, with its second season coming out in 2024.

The series is directed by Tomohito Naka, with Kenichi Yamashita credited for supervising the scripts, which are co-written by Akihiko Inari. Naoyuki Onda designed the characters, while Akio Dobashi composed the music, and Masafumi Mima as sound director.

Following the season 3 announcement, staff for MF Ghost’s anime released comments celebrating the conclusion of MF Ghost’s manga. The statements have been machine-translated and included in this article:

From director Tomohito Naka: “It’s heartwarming to see that you have made it this far after all the hard work of creating it. It feels so sad that their story is coming to an end, but the anime adaptation is only halfway there… I hope to carefully film this wonderful story, which is full of the teacher’s soul, and share it with as many people as possible. The anime production staff will do their utmost to deliver this to you. Thank you so much for creating MF Ghost!”

Naoyuki Onda, who is the chief animation director and character designer, also provided an illustration commemorating the manga finale.

The illustration came with his own comment: “First of all, congratulations on completing the serialisation of MF Ghost. Shigeno’s work is of course known for Initial D. but I was also an avid reader of Bari Bari Densetsu, and I also liked Sho, so I was eagerly waiting for the next volume. Due to timing and other factors I wasn’t able to participate in Initial D, so I was just one of the chatterers watching with my fingers crossed. But this time I was unexpectedly asked to take part, so as a manga nerd who loves cars I was very happy. Thank you very much.”

From sound director Masafumi Mima: "Thank you for your hard work! I have never met Shigeno-sensei before (that’s strange…) but for some reason I feel like I have met him. (Which is also strange…) it feels like we’ve been working together on the project all this time. Cars are a dream for me, and I am truly happy to have come across the work Initial D at Dream. I am truly grateful to my teacher, who created this book. ‘Ongaeshi’ is a carefully crafted work that allows fans to enjoy the anime version of MF Ghost until the very end. I think it’s made up. Thank you so much. And good job!”
