Make A Girl debuted in Japanese theatres today, January 31.

In an official announcement to X (formerly Twitter), Make A Girl’s PR account revealed that a second movie picking up where Make A Girl left off is set to release in 2027, making the upcoming entry Director Gensho Yasuda’s second feature-length film.

No further information for the sequel has been released, but the PR page alludes to the special footage released after the end credits, which includes a mysterious, knife-twirling silver-haired girl. This assassin also featured in a lot of the shorts that Yasuda released on YouTube.

Make A Girl is a sci-fi romance centering around a brilliant young scientist named Akira Mizutame, who finds himself at a dead end after a series of failed inventions. To get over the slump, a friend suggests getting a girlfriend as a power up for Akira. Taking this suggestion a little too literally, Akira develops an artificial partner he calls No.0 who literally becomes his girlfriend.

Although No.0 is artificially made, her evolving emotions becomes a source of internal conflict for the robot, blurring the lines between artificial and real, leading to a blossoming relationship between the two that goes beyond No.0’s program.

But it’s not all roses and butterflies for the young lovers, as rival inventors are set to get their hands on No.0 to dissect the technology behind her rapidly evolving independence.

Yasuda Gensho is the director, storyboarder, screenplay writer, and original creator of the story, and rose to fame as an indie animator and creator working mainly with 3D CG. Make A Girl is based on his 2020 short original net animation video ‘Make Love’.

An international release for Make A Girl is yet to be announced.
