Before we dive back into Maomao's complex world, here's everything you need to know.
Maomao is back to solve more medical mysteries with the arrival of the second season of Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) this January.
With only a couple of days before we return to Maomao’s world full of intrigue, here’s everything you should know about the upcoming season.
When is season 2 coming out?
The first episode comes out on Friday, the 10th of January 2025, at 11:00 PM JST (Japan Standard Time), or 10:00 PM SGT (Singapore Time).
The second season will feature 24 episodes divided into two cours. The opening theme, Hyakka Ryouran ("A Profusion of Flowers"), is performed by singer-songwriter Lilas Ikuta, also known as Ikura, the vocalist of YOASOBI. This will also be Ikuta's first time as a solo artist performing an opening song for a TV anime series.
Season 1 Recap
Based on the beloved light novels written by Natsu Hyuuga and illustrated by Shino Touko, Apothecary Diaries follows the story of Maomao, a clever and resourceful apothecary who was kidnapped and sold into service as a maid in the imperial palace.
During the first season, Maomao tried to keep a low profile. However, her knowledge of medicine and sharp observational skills come to light when she deduces the causes behind mysterious illnesses and deaths affecting the emperor's consorts and their children.
The handsome and mysterious palace official Jinshi notices her talents and starts to task her with investigating different incidents. Palace life is defined by intricate hierarchies, plots, and rivalries, which Maomao discovers as she probes further into these mysteries.
The relationship between Maomao and Jinshi is a central thread that evolves throughout the season. While Maomao’s sharp tongue and indifference to Jinshi’s allure amuse and frustrate him, Jinshi seems equally fascinated by her intelligence and unflappable demeanour. Their interactions are laced with tension, humour, and subtle undercurrents of attraction, although Maomao remains suspicious of his true motives.
Season 1 of the anime adapts up to Chapters 38-40 of the manga, or Chapter 20 and the epilogue of the light novel's second volume.
What can we expect in Season 2?
The second season will cover the events around the Ka Clan Arc (皇族, Kōzoku), which is the imperial family. Should the anime continue with a similar pacing of adapting at least one chapter per episode like Season 1, we can expect Season 2 to cover up to the first few chapters of Volume 4 of the light novel.
The second season of The Apothecary Diaries is expected to bring more intrigue and challenges for Maomao. As she navigates the dangerous inner palace, her skills are put to the test through new mysteries, political tensions, and evolving relationships. Fans can look forward to sharp problem-solving, deeper character moments, and a broader look at Maomao’s world—and perhaps more importantly, the complex dynamics of Jinshi and Maomao’s relationship.
Of course, we don’t know the exact details of the second season’s pacing, so we’ll just have to find out when it airs.
Where can I watch the second season?
Season 2 of the Apothecary Diaries will be available on Crunchyroll and Netlfix.
