One Piece Chapter 1143: Luffy and Loki clash while the giant kids sleepwalk towards danger

The Devil Fruit powers of St. Sommers and St. Killingham are revealed.

The Holy Knights are not so holy indeed, as shown in the latest chapter of the One Piece manga. Not only do they seek to harm the whole race of giants, but they are also unafraid of putting their kids in danger to achieve it. St. Sommers reveals how he made rings of thorns around the sleepwalking kids so the parents would be able to touch or stop them. On the other hand, Loki’s injured body finally gives out.

Spoiler Alert: this article contains massive spoilers from the One Piece manga.

One Piece Chapter 1143 recap

The chapter begins with Saul trying to stop the sleepwalking group of kids despite Robin’s protests. Suddenly, massive thorns start growing around the child’s body and injure Saul. Ms. Ange makes a call to the rest of the giants and tells them about the situation. We learn that not only are the nine children sleepwalking towards the strange monsters, but they’re also heading towards a fire that broke out. All the giants who were celebrating are alerted as they start worrying about their children. The giants’ firefighter crew heads towards the fire, but a massive skeletal monster throws the ship away.

Elsewhere, St. Sommers, St. Killingham, and Gunko are seen having a meal together. St. Sommers, who has the Thorn-Thorn Fruit’s powers, made it so that a thorny vice would wrap around the bodies of the sleeping children. When their parents try to grab them, they get injured, and some might even die. The sadistic plan is also aided by Gunko, who laid down an arrow from the school to the port, which the children had to follow. St. Killingham, who ate the Mythical-Type Dragon-Dragon Fruit, pulled out the monsters known as Sleeptids from the kids’ minds. The three do not care if the children walk into the fire, as they can always send more.

In the Underworld, Loki seems to be out of stamina and can no longer lift the Ragnir. But the damage is already done because his explosions have started a massive fire that the kids might walk into. Luffy says he will stop Loki, and everyone gets ready for a big fight. However, one attack from Luffy causes Loki to fall to the ground, showing how serious his injuries are. Upon Luffy’s request, Hajrudin and the other giants agree to treat Loki, but Gerd says that it will take months for him to fully recover. Suddenly, Hajrudin remembers all the harsh things Loki said about his mother and how he killed their father. He prepares to cut off Loki’s horns. Luffy stops him, but Loki wakes up and tells him to go on. He says that although everyone thinks he killed their father, King Harald, with purely murderous intentions, Hajrudin knows that it is not true.

One Piece Chapter 1143 review

More family drama? Yes, please. Other than Loki’s badass design, there are not many redeeming qualities about the giant. But I’m looking forward to a sad backstory involving Hajrudin, which might warm my heart for this heartless creature. As one of the strongest entities in the world, Loki will no doubt be an extremely important character down the line. But how this next arc unfolds will determine whether he will be a friend or a foe of the Straw Hats. It would also be nice to see the estranged brothers hug it out. I also can’t wait for everyone to take down the three Holy Knights for trying to hurt the children. Overall, I’m definitely looking forward to the upcoming battle on the horizon (much like the weird monsters from the kids’ imagination). I have to mention that the colour spread for this chapter was also amazing!
