Two movies compiling the Girls Band Cry anime are slated for a 2025 release.
Revealed during the Toei 2025-2026 lineup announcement press conference on Thursday, 16 January, the two-film compilation for the 2024 anime Girls Band Cry is slated for a 2025 release. An official date is yet to be determined.
Girls Band Cry is an original anime television series created and produced by Toei Animation, and is part of a multimedia project in collaboration with Agehasprings and Universal Music Japan.
The anime follows a high school dropout named Nina Iseri, who moves to Tokyo to prove that she can live by herself and be successful. A chance encounter with Momoka Kawaragi inspires Nina to form a band with her, due to their commonalities and shared love for music. Alongside other girls with their own kind of struggles, the band Tonegashi Togeari (Thornless Thorn) becomes an outlet for the group to let their raw emotions out.
Girls Band Cry was conceptualised in 2019 when series producer Tadashi Hirayama (Accel World, One Piece Fan Letter) was approached to produce a new original work focused on music. It was directed by Kazuo Sakai (Love Live! Sunshine!!, Bodacious Space Pirates: Abyss of Hyperspace), with Jukki Hanada (Medalist, ATRI: My Dear Moments) handling the composition and screenplay. Kenji Tamai of Agehasprings composed the music.
The main cast was composed of Rina as Nina Iseri, Yuri as Momoka Kawaragi, Mirei as Subaru Awa, Natsu as Tomo Ebizuka, and Syuri as Rupa. The voice actresses were scouted from an audition organised by Agehasprings, Toei Animation, and Universal Music Japan, called “Girl’s Rock Audition.”
