The five most terrifying anime villains you don’t want to meet

Source: Toei Animation

Certain anime characters out there are so terrible, they make you thankful that they don’t exist in real life.

From world domination, to the total annihilation of all living things. From sociopathy, to unspeakable crimes. Anime isn’t all rainbows and butterflies. Sometimes, there are characters out there who’d do everything to get whatever they want, no matter what or who they need to sacrifice for their own gain.

Here are the worst of the worst anime villains who send chills down our spines!

Griffith

From Berserk

Any seinen fan will know what Berserk is about and exactly who Griffith is, and if you ask what their thoughts are about this particular character, it all boils down to one opinion: Griffith is probably the most evil and most condemnable character in all of anime history.

Griffith portrayed himself as the stereotypical righteous leader, one who inspires his fellow crew and followers with his beauty, wit, strength, and charm. But behind his ethereal face is a monster who would betray and sacrifice even those who love him to attain his dream of ultimate power, manipulating the world in the process. No sane person would even attempt to excuse his terrible crimes against humanity. To quote that one review, “Griffith, may his name be forgotten forever, demon from hell.”

Johan Liebert

From Monster

Monster is a totally underrated masterpiece that doesn’t hold your hand when it comes to the philosophical conversation of true evil, personified by the character of Johan Liebert.

Johan Liebert is what you would describe as a true psychopath. He has no shred of sympathy or empathy for the world, and finds purpose in destruction, manipulation, and murder. Johan also displays a total and chilling disinterest for everything, making him a really uncomfortable character to watch onscreen.

Shou Tucker

From Fullmetal Alchemist

Although Shou Tucker isn’t as massive an influence like Griffith or Johann Liebert, he’s rightfully earned the vitriol and hate of longtime anime fans due to one fateful episode from Fullmetal Alchemist.

Shou Tucker is ambitious and self-serving, and will do whatever it takes to keep his State Alchemist title, though at first he keeps his cold interior under the guise of being a kind and loving father to his daughter Nina. When the risk of losing his State Alchemist becomes apparent however, Shou Tucker reveals his true colours to Edward and Alphonse when he presents to them his Chimera magnum opus – made by sacrificing his daughter and her beloved dog. Admittedly, when he finally met his well-deserved end at the hands of Scar, I jumped for joy. Bye bozo!

Mahito

From Jujutsu Kaisen

Mahito is a formidable and chilling villain simply because he views humanity as nothing more than worthless objects that need to be annihilated. As such, he exhibits absolute indifference to the human lives he takes, and even enjoys psychologically manipulating and torturing his enemies and victims.

Not only that, but Mahito is not known for self-control; much like Frieza and Griffith on this list, he doesn’t have a problem with committing large-scale atrocities without hesitation to reach his goals.

Frieza

From Dragon Ball

Frieza is probably one of the most iconic villains in anime of all time. Known for his cruel, tyrannical streak, Frieza is oppressive, sadistic, and completely malevolent.

Frieza rules like a strongman, governing through arrogance, utter fear and brute strength. He has destroyed whole planets, enslaved numerous peoples, and subjugated entire populations simply because he enjoys it or seeks to gain immense wealth. Frieza views life as worthless and will kill anyone and everyone, simply because of a slight perceived inconvenience or to prove a point.
