The Detective Conan anime has recast the role of Toru Amuro after voice actor Toru Furuya stepped down in 2024.
Detective Conan’s episode #1150, which aired last Saturday 18 January, has confirmed that Takeshi Kusao (Trunks from Dragon Ball, Sakuragi from Slam Dunk) will now voice the role of Toru Amuro.
The character was previously voiced by Toru Furuya, who took on the role in 2012. Furuya would step down from the role in June of 2024 after acknowledging a previous report by the Shukan Bunshun magazine released in May 2024. The report revealed a four-year affair with a female fan who was 37 years his junior, which ended in September 2023.
The affair was also marred with allegations of abuse, as well as Furuya pressuring said female fan into having an abortion. Furuya has been married to his wife, Satomi Majima, since March 1985. Furuya released a statement to his now deleted X (formerly Twitter) account apologising for his infidelity.
Furuya has also stepped down from the role of Sabo from One Piece, and been recast from a number of his active roles. Ryota Suzuki (Love is War, Dr. Stone) replaced Furuya as Yamcha in Dragon Ball Daima, while Miyu Irino (A Silent Voice, Eyeshield 21) has taken on the role of Sabo. Furuya has also been removed from Atlus’s Metaphor: ReFantazio cast.
The character Toru Amuro in Detective Conan was named after Furuya, and his role as Amuro Ray in Mobile Suit Gundam.
